“Sociometry is the study and measurement of interpersonal relationships in a group of people.” Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary

You may be wondering what sociometry has to do with search engines. Well, I intend to use the idea as a platform for discussing how people behave in a group and offer it as a way to understand how search engines operate.

Now imagine there is a summit. You are invited only if you have certain qualifications. It could be wealth, educational qualification, position held in government or business. Whatever. It may even be gender or age. Think of this attainment or possession that qualifies you for an invitation to this important summit as the theme of your website.

When you decide to honour the invitation, you leave every other engagement and assignment because you think that your attendance will do you some good. This parallels the submission of your website to the search engines.

Arriving for the submit, will you be on the high table, in any other visible position or in an obscure corner of the hall? Only the summit organisers can determine this. It would depend on how important they think you are. And they would measure your importance by their estimate of your knowledge of the subject to be discussed and how much you can contribute to the success of the summit. This approximates keywords (including key phrases) that are relevant with regard to your website.

If you were a reporter covering this submit you would probably notice that some participants enjoy a lot of handshakes at the instance of others and this is not the case for some. You would probably see that when some people extend their hand it is taken with something close to reverence and gratitude by the person to whom it was extended. Not everyone enjoys the same attention and share of conversation. As a reporter, you would be able to form an opinion based on what you observed about who the influential participants are. In search engine terms, this would be linking. What qualified these people for the monopoly of attention? How would you get links to your website?

The above discussion is only by way of an analogy and is not meant to present an exact description of how search engines review, index, rank and throw up your website when a surfer types in their search terms.

Websites that are dependent on search engine traffic rely heavily on detailed keyword research to reach their target audience. Whether the resulting information is used for PPC, SEO or featured ads is beside the point. Simply put, if you want to exploit search traffic, you need accurate data on the number of searches carried out for each particular keyword.

Some companies will sub contract the keyword research to a specialist company and others will tackle it in-house. Regardless of who performs the research, a large number of people will primarily use the information provided by the Overture Keyword Assistant as the foundation of the project. I’ve been of the view for some time that the data Overture provides is often inflated, especially primary keywords. Recently I have been conducting tests to ascertain the accuracy of Overtures data in an effort to prove my suspicions and to see how big the problem is. The results so far are way beyond what I expected.

The SEO Research

Approximately one year ago I set up a new website focused on VoIP phone systems (www.ip-phone-system.co.uk). The website was built to rank highly on Yahoo for the search phrase “Phone System” and a number of other keyword phrases. According to Overture the phrase “phone system” has 350,066 searches performed each month in the UK alone. The website is currently on the first page of results in Yahoo.com and in the top three positions for Yahoo’s UK only search.

With the keyword tool reporting this amount of searches and the websites position, you would expect the site to be receiving a large volume of traffic. But to put it simply, it does not. For example, over the last two months the site has only received three visits from people searching for “phone system”.

This test is not concrete because the majority of searches for phone system could be performed on another engine that Overture pulls its results from like MSN. But you would have to agree that it’s not very likely. Especially when you consider the site ranks in the top three positions for the search phrase “phone system” on MSN.

Overture’s keyword tool pulls its results from a number of sources, Yahoo and MSN being the largest in terms of traffic. The site has a large number of top three listings on apparently high traffic yielding phrases e.g. IP Phone, Business Phone System, Office Phone System etc. yet only receives a very small number of visitors.

Phantom Traffic

So what’s causing the highly inflated number of impressions the tool returns? I can’t say for sure but can certainly name a few things that could be significantly contributing to the effect. I’m also going to try and coin a phrase here and call the phenomena “Phantom Traffic”, which simply means non-genuine traffic or searches conducted for other reasons than an actual genuine interest of finding a site relating to a keywords particular theme. I strongly believe both of the examples below are affecting Overtures data and are contributors of phantom traffic.

1. Manual SEO Position checking

People manually checking the search results to ascertain a websites position. Search phrases that are perceived to be high traffic yielding in theory will have more people conducting optimisation and therefore more people manually checking their positions. More people manually checking their positions causes the number of impressions to be inflated (phantom traffic). This is self perpetuating; the more people checking results inflate the number of impressions, causing even more people to target the phrase and manually check their positions etc. etc. etc.

I’m certain this is impacting the Overture Keyword Suggestion tool significantly enough to cause many sites to chase phantom traffic. I also believe this to be the biggest contributing source of phantom traffic. Many webmasters manually check their rankings every day and some even more.

Auto Generated Pages Compiled from SERP’s (Search Engine Results Pages)

Spam sites gathering keyword rich content from the SERP’s. These sites will automatically query search engines for their most sort after keywords (probably researched via the Overture keyword suggestion tool). The sites automatically copy the results pages of the search engines which are highly keyword focused. Quite often these sites will auto generate tens of thousands of pages, all focused on a select number of keyword variations. These keyword rich pages are normally buried quite deep in the site because they have no value to human visitors. Each page will be linked using rich anchor text and then pass the relevance back to one of the main pages via an anchor text link.

The idea behind this SEO trick is simply to produce large amounts of optimised content that’s linked together in a favourable fashion. Some of the programming that goes into these kinds of practices can be very clever, while others are very basic indeed. The problem is virtually every page being generated or regenerated for that matter is influencing Overtures data, unless the programmer is using an API key (which is unlikely).

Conclusion

This is very worrying to me as there must be a large number of people who base their entire keyword research campaigns on the data from Overture. This may cause their entire marketing campaign to focus on nothing more than Phantom Traffic. So what can one do to avoid targeting phrases that mainly consist of phantom traffic?

Well first of all it’s wise to use a combination of data sources. Wordtracker provides similar data to Overture but it’s gathered from different sources. Comparing the two data sources can sometimes highlight phantom traffic. If you notice keywords with an extremely high number of impressions, just ask yourself if it’s believable. Common sense can go a long way in this game.

Personally I’ve always advised clients to target sub-primary keyword phrases first and once rankings are achieved to focus on the next sub-primary phrase. If you intelligently select sub-primary keyword phrases that include the primary keywords, you are optimising the primary keyword at the same time.

Example

A good example of this is the sub primary keyword phrases, “web design Manchester”. The company I work for is currently listed on the first page of the major search engines for this phrase. The primary phrase is “web design” and is also being optimised at the same time because the words are contained in “web design Manchester” (we’re currently holding position 11 on Yahoo UK for search phrase “web design”). The search phrase “web design Manchester” is also one of our best performing keywords because it is so targeted. Anyone searching on that term is specifically interested in web design in the Manchester area.

Optimising in this fashion has several benefits. First of all sub-primary phrases should be less effected by Phantom Traffic and the number of impressions you see should be similar to the number of genuine searches carried out. Sub-primary phrases tend to also be less competitive with fewer people specifically optimising for them (however, this is not always the case). So reaching a traffic generating position is easier and faster resulting in faster ROI.

Once enough sub-primary phrases are optimised to rank well for primary keywords. The campaign will already be bringing in targeted traffic and therefore cause much less pain and wasted effort if the primary keyword is heavily affected by Phantom Traffic.

The other advantage is much of the time sub-primary phrases are more targeted and the traffic they bring tend to convert much better. I have personally seen this time and time again. Sites that have little traffic but enjoy a conversion ratio of 1/3 because the traffic they do receive is extremely targeted sub-primary keyword phrases. These websites often out perform sites receiving ten times the amount of traffic from primary keywords. It’s all down to specifics though and what works for some may not work for you. As mentioned before, common sense goes a very long way in this game. Just don’t get caught up chasing phantom traffic.

What’s a Search Engine? Oohs.

It is a program designed to do basically three things.

1. Gathers copies of web pages from the world wide web.

2. Stores the copies of web pages in its index or database.

3. Looks up its huge database of web pages to find matches to search query, and ranks them in order of relevance.

For example if you go to Google search and type in the words ’search engine’ and hit the enter button. Immediately, the Google Search Engine starts to query its huge database and try to find web pages that matches the search term ’search engine’, and ranks them according to relevance.

Ranking according to relevance is determined by the Search Engine algorithm (specific requirements). Every Search Engine has its own peculiar algorithm.

Basically there are 2 types of Search Engines, human edited directories and crawler-based Search Engines. The operations of these 2 types of Search Engines are different.

What is a human edited directory?

As the term suggests, a human edited directory depends on humans to review, approve and compile its listings of web pages. The Yahoo Directory and Open Directory Project (DMOZ) are examples of human edited directories. You submit a short description of your website to the directory. Search results only show matches in the descriptions submitted. Changing your web pages does not have any effect on listing in a directory.

What is a crawler-based Search Engine?

First and foremost, let’s understand what’s a crawler? It is one component of a Search Engine that automatically ‘crawled the web’ to gather listings. The Search Engine ‘crawler’, which is also known as ’spider’ or ‘robot’ visits a web page, reads it, and follows links to other web pages. It gathers copies of web pages and stores them in the Search Engines index (database). When people type in a search term the Search Engine looks up its database of web pages, and uses its specific algorithm (specific requirements) to determine which pages closely match the search term.

Crawler-based Search engines, gathers and creates listing automatically. New web pages are automatically crawled and indexed, and changes made to existing web pages are also automatically updated. If you make changes to your web pages, the crawlers will find these changes, which in turn may affect the ranking of your web pages.

For a crawler based Search Engine, it is the crawler that does the work of gathering and compiling the listing. Google is one example of the many crawler-based Search Engines.

Practically speaking, you don’t have to submit your web page to Google. Google’s crawler, Googlebot will find your web pages. In fact, Google’s crawler does a more efficient job of finding and indexing web pages. Just for peace of mind, however, you could submit your web page to Google to be indexed and ranked.

For smaller crawler-based search Engines, you still need to submit your web pages for listing. Upon confirmation of your submission, crawlers are sent out to index your web pages.

Human edited directory like DMOZ, which is a free listing directory, depends on humans to review, approve and compile its listings of web pages. DMOZ is staffed by volunteer editors. There is a massive backlog because everyday thousands of new web sites are being submitted for listing. It used to take anywhere between 2 to 6 months to get your web site listed. It may take longer now. The backlog of paid commercial directories is smaller compared to DMOZ.

Google has recently made some pretty significant changes in its ranking algorithm. The latest update, dubbed by Google forum users as “Allegra”, has left some web sites in the dust and catapulted others to top positions. Major updates like this can happen a few times a year at Google, which is why picking the right search engine optimization company can be the difference between online success and failure. However, it becomes an increasingly difficult decision when SEO firms themselves are suffering from the Allegra update.

Over-optimization may have played the biggest part in the dropping of seo- guy.com from the top 50 Google results. Filtering out web sites that have had readability sacrificed for optimization is a growing trend at Google. It started with the Sandbox Effect in late 2004, where relatively new sites were not being seen at all in the Google results even with good keyword placement in content and incoming links. Many thought it was a deliberate effort by Google to penalize sites that had SEO work done. It’s a few months later and we see many of the ’sandboxed’ web sites finally appearing well for their targeted keywords.

With 44 occurrences of ‘SEO’ on the relatively short home page of seo-guy.com, and many of them in close proximity to each other, the content reads like a page designed for search engine robots, not the visitor. This ranking shift should come as no surprise to SEO professionals as people have been saying it for years now: Sites should be designed for visitors, not search engine robots. Alas, some of us don’t listen and this is what happens when search engines finally make their move.

One aspect of search engine optimization that is also affected in a roundabout way is link popularity development. After observing the effects of strictly relevant link exchanges on many of our client’s sites recently, we’ve noticed incredibly fast #1 rankings on Google. It seems Google may be looking out for links pages designed for the sole purpose of raising link popularity and devalues the relevance of the site. After all, if a links page on a real estate site has 100 outgoing links to pharmacy sites, there has to be a lot of content on that page completely unrelated to real estate. Not until now has that been so detrimental to a site’s overall relevance to search terms. It goes back to the old rule of thumb: Make your visitors the top priority. Create a resources page that actually contains useful links for your site users. If you need to do reciprocal linking then keep it relevant and work those sites in with other good resources.

Keeping up with the online search world can be overwhelming for the average small business owner or corporate marketing department. Constant Google changes, MSN coming on the scene in a big way, and all the hype around the new Become.com shopping search function can make heads spin. But just keep things simple and follow the main rules that have been around for years. Google, as well as other search engines, won’t ever be able to ignore informative, well written content along with good quality votes from other web sites.

Having your site top-ranked for a hot keyword can effectively improve your traffic and therefore your profits as well. All you need to do is to optimise your content and create many links of different quality. But if you don’t have any money to start off, its hard but it can be done.

You may also have the money it takes for reaching a top position, but are unsure if your money will be well spent or not. It may cost you a whole lot more than you thought in the beginning.

Wether you have the money or not, considering a self made budget SEO is a wise thing to do, because it’s both free and educating. After a while, you will gradually improve your technique and you will become an SEO expert. Once you’re there, you will be able to perform as good as a paid SEO but saving the money it takes to hire one.

Here’s 10 free ways to improve your rankings

1. Directory submissions - The most effective way in getting lots of back links fast. Grab a good directory list and submit your link in every single directory. Make sure that you get a few new back links everyday to ensure long term success. The best way to do that is by viewing all new directory announcements in Digital Points forum Solicitations & Announcements section.

2. Article Submissions - Almost every single article directory on the web is free. Article directories are a good compliment to ordinary directories because it will bring you more diversity in your back link structure. Write a good article with more than 500 words and include a back link to your site and submit it to all major article directories. Hope fully, if your article is good, some webmaster will pick it and put it on their own sites, so you’re not only getting back links from the article directories themselves, you are also getting free back links from real sites, which is very valuable in search engines like Google.

3. Wikipedia.org - A good source to collect incoming links. Do you have any content that is related to any wikipedia article? In that case, you can edit the wikipedia article and input your link on the link page. Make sure that the content you are linking meets up with the standard, otherwise, your link will be removed as fast as it came up.

4. Onpage SEO - Onpage optimisation was the most important SEO technique available before 2001. Today, it does not have the same decisive factor that it once had. It is however still very useful to do some basic onpage SEO. Make sure that your targeted keywords are included in the title, the headline and the footer. Make sure that you always provide some fresh content on the pages that you specifically want to optimise. Provide it at least with an RSS feed. But most important, make sure that the onpage SEO does not overshadow the content and make your site look less useful.

5. PRWeb.com - Post a press release once you release your site. It will help you a little bit in the rankings, but most importantly, if your Press release is good, you will get some natural links generated by PRWebs users.

6. Myspace.com - Myspace has recently become one of the hottest sites on the internet. It has also became one of the most effective places to market your site. Just make a profile for your site there, then try to get as many friends as possible. Post links to your sites on other profiles, post bulletins of your site and if it’s cool enough, you will get some natural back links in return.

7. Ask for back links - Send out nice original emails to other webmasters that have similar sites. Write some sentences about what you think of their site or anything related to the subject of their site. When you get the reply, answer them, tell them something more and then ask for a reciprocal or a one-way link.

8. Forums - Forums are not only a great place to discuss things but also a good resource for generating back links, feedback and traffic. Put a link in your signature. Make a post about your site or even better, make a post about something and then make a related link to your site. Note, go for inactive forums, they tend to give more weight than the active ones and your link will be displayed over a longer time.

9. Make sattelite sites - Put up a site with some content on e.g. geocities.com and include a back link to your site somewhere, then submit the sattelite site to somewhere around 100 directories so it will be indexed in Google, and you got a high quality back link.

10. Also, SEO is an area where there are lots of paid alternatives that may help you in getting a good ranking. Some of these are paid article submission, paid onpage optimisation, paid directory submission paid link exchanges and paid links. If you are good on doing directory submissions but bad on onpage SEO, you can charge for making directory submissions for others and then hire someone to do onpage SEO for you.

The Search Engine Strategies event provided us with fodder for a series of articles to help business owners increase their market share, extend their marketing reach, and dramatically expand their geographical reach into new sources and new markets. Search engine optimization allows a company’s web site to defeat time and distance to maximize the company’s potential.

Why we went:

The last time we sent anyone to the Search Engine Strategies conference was in 2001 - I think. Not because we were really interested in that technical stuff, but because we thought our readers might be.

Only two of us went and found very little that seemed relevant. At the time our readers, established successful mainstream companies, were just getting serious about their Internet presence. What would we find for them? Not much.

The focus in 2001 was on the big companies with IT staffs and (relatively) unlimited resources, huge web sites and bulging budgets. We did come across a few things, the only one I remember was the session by Heather-Lloyd Martin and Jill Whalen, called “Writing For Search Engines”. I was actually interested in that session for us, not our readers.

This year, 2006, we decided to return. After all it was here in NYC and they were kind enough to provide me with press credentials. All I had to lose was cab fare and a few hours time.

Halfway through the first session I attended, hosted by Danny Sullivan the editor of SearchEngineWatch.com - I knew I had made the right decision.

In his warm-up Danny (I don’t know him but you feel like you do after listening to him for a few minutes) asked the audience (probably more people attended that session - one of several at that moment, than attended the entire event in ‘01),

How many of you are web marketers?

How many of you are here for the first time? etc. etc.

After listening to him for 45 minutes it was clear to me that, we’re all web marketers or we’d better be! Our serious competitors are and they will be taking our business right out from under our noses unless we begin to pay real attention to our search engine strategies.

Our readers, and probably too, want to grow their market share. They want to do more business with each of their customers, and they want to expand their reach (geographically). And they want to do it 24/7/365 as cost effectively as possible. How is that possible? That’s what we were there to find out - and we did.

What we found:

Sessions for people like us (and our readers). Search engine optimization is not just for Internet entrepreneurs and giant companies anymore. It is for Main Street companies too.

There were three program tracks from introductory to expert. I found some very useful information in each - which I’ll be describing in future articles. What I came up with were ideas and strategies our D.I.Y. (do it yourself) readers can use to maximize what they already have in place.

There were ideas that caused me to say to myself, “why didn’t I think of that” and others that we’d started using but then lost interest in when there was no instant jump in our traffic. You know, those, “if I knew then what I know now” sort of things. And we learned how we and our readers can be better buyers of the services they can’t or don’t want to do themselves.

There’s an SES event coming to a city near you:

That is not literally true - but there are several upcoming during 2006 and I met people from all over the country at the one here in NYC.

At lunch the first day (more about this in a future article) I met two guys from a family owned company in California. Their boss had attended the Search Engine Strategies event in Chicago (I think) and she told them to come to this one.

Their company is as non-Internet as any you can imagine and they were already busy making notes for what to do when they go back to the plant.

I called 3 of my colleagues and they attended just the “exhibit only” area the next two days. Time and (very little) money well spent!

This article will be posted on our web site complete with links to SES resources. There will be 6-12 additional articles described there. The articles will be posted as soon as they are written.

The bottom line:

“We are ALL web marketers or we had better be, because our competitors are!”

Our objective is to shine a light into the ways that each of you - no matter where you are in the process, can put your business (via your web site) to work more effectively - to realize your company’s potential.

One of the exciting new developments in the field of search engine exposure is the optimization of your press releases. This offers you a great way to increase your presence on the web and be found for an expanded amount of keywords.

Press releases were traditionally aimed at media types such as journalists and editors. Today they have another audience – your target market. Online press releases are now coming up under searches. Potential customers can access your information directly from your press releases. Therefore if you optimize your press releases you can help people find your web site and product information.

The first step involves researching keywords that your prospects will use to find you. This is similar to deciding on keywords for your web site. Of course, you can target different keywords, thus increasing your overall chance of being found within the search engines.

To optimize your news releases your keywords should be placed in the title of the press release and near the beginning of the content of the document. Again this is similar to adding keywords to the written content of your web page. Remember that your keyword-rich title and content should read well and be interesting. This will attract the reader to your site content. To help the readers find your site you should include your full domain name within the text. This is a great way to improve your reciprocal linking and in turn your page ranking. You should also provide links from your written text directly to the relevant page of your website.

Publish your press releases on your own web site and also submit them to online media outlets. You should also submit your press releases to the major news search engines. News search engines are being used by both media searchers and the general public and so are a great way to expand your search engine presence. And the exciting part is that the news search engines will often pick up your story in minutes. You should also make use of XML and RSS news feeds.

Optimized press releases offer you many opportunities. And they are a great new way to increase your visibility on the web. It requires from you a combination of marketing copy writing skills and web page optimization techniques. But the results are worth the effort - by adding to your web presence and attracting increasing amounts of qualified visitors to your site.

To be effective in the internet promotions, you must target to the enough narrow and specific target group.

To be able to do this, keywords act the main role.

Actually keywords are your markets. Let us take an example of the meaning of targeting. If you make a speech to the audience of 1.000 people, you speak most obviously on a very general level and not so personally.

If you speak or discuss with one person, you can use all means of communication. Speak personally, more freely, answer questions and comment on what that other person is saying. This is targeted internet marketing.Think about just two stat figures about the internet. Around one billion searches are made every single day using different keywords. Do you think targeted internet marketing would be useful?

Some one billion websites are online offering their services and around 200.000 new blogs are launched every single day. No one can calculate how many different articles and other writings are released, using different keywords.

Only a fool can think to succeed by accident without planning. Planning means to choose the target group according your business idea. The business idea gives the answer, why the site is online. What different and unique needs it will satisfy? And who has those needs?I will not handle the preparation of business plan here but only how to reach the narrow target groups and what targeted internet marketing means.

It is funny that targeted internet marketing is actually a two way process. Your potential customers search interesting affiliate programs online using search engines, typing wide or narrow keywords on the search bars. So they target to your site or blog and you target to them. Do you meet, it is totally up to you.

A good thing is that the keywords used are registered by services like WordTracker, which also gives you an inresting figure. How effective the keyword is, or what is the ratio between demand and supply. The more demand and the few supply, the more power your keyword will get. When you have found out from 2 to 3 keywords, you can use them to optimize your writings, like website, article or blog, to be able to better reach a position on the first page of search results.

It is wise to promote on many markets. This happens simply by using different keywords in different articles, blogpages or webpages. If you choose PPC, pay per click, the idea is the same. You just have to have more keywords, tens or hundreds.

As a summary, targeted internet margeting means two things. To choose a target group and, this is the most important, to find low competition keywords. It is so simple.

You open your internet browser and enter: SEO into the search box. In a nano-second you are provided with thousands of results for SEO. SEO tools, SEO books, SEO software programs, SEO consulting firms, SEO forums, SEO website developers, and more. Your head begins spinning with so many choices before you. Especially considering that the success of your business is largely dependant upon choosing the correct SEO procedures for your website. It can be hard to make heads or tails from it all.

At first glance SEO and all of its strategies might seem to be nothing more than just common sense, and how hard could that be? But in actuality, many of the strategies involved in search engine optimization can be difficult to implement in order to benefit your website and your bottom line. It is for this reason that you might need help with the SEO of your website.

It is so easy for those who are inexperienced with search engine optimization to make a mistake that costs their website the high-ranking it needs to generate traffic crucial to high sales, or worse, get their website expelled from search engines. There are those out there on the internet all too eager to lead an unwitting newcomer to the world of internet marketing astray. They happily skip off with your money, while you scratch your head in disbelief. Save yourself from having this happen to you by getting the SEO help you need to optimize your website.

Someone with comprehensive knowledge about how search engines work and what exactly a website needs to meet the requirements for listing and positioning among search engines can ensure your website is meeting those requirements. These experts also know what to do to beef up a website with straight-forward SEO, for websites that would otherwise fall short of the requirements of the search engines.

SEO experts are your #1 resource for information about the newest SEO strategies, services, and software programs coming in to use in the marketing industry. The knowledge you can glean from these experts can save you countless hours of searching for the answers you need about search engine optimization and from wasted dollars on materials that are not necessary.

Most webmasters are busy enough making sure the warehouse is properly stocked with product and fulfilling orders, without the added burden of finding the time to properly monitor all of the things that are involved in the SEO of a website. The last thing you want as a webmaster is to get buried under the avalanche of reports that are produced from using various SEO strategies so that you’re unable to use that information to better your bottom line (sales.) Having someone help keep you on-track by organizing, and monitoring the results reported, pays a big dividend in the headaches and missed opportunities to increase sales and profit that won’t happen because you have competent help on your side.

The question you should be asking yourself at this moment isn’t why you might need SEO help, but when are you going to get the SEO help you and your business deserve? You can find reputable SEO consultants and firms to help you with optimizing your web site online. Ask them to give you a complete proposal of how they can help you with the SEO of your website. Make sure they can show you success stories from other clients and go with the ones who have had the best results with search engine optimization.
